People and the human form fascinate me. I love to observe the intrinsic architecture of a person’s face and the feelings conveyed through their gestures and expressions. I concentrate on the atmosphere and mood that is revealed in the subtle ways a head is turned, or how the eyes and mouth are cast. The human form is a beautiful landscape to explore on many levels. I am compelled to convey this complex form through my painting.
Through my portraiture, I strive to capture and preserve the character, vitality and emotion that is revealed during specific moments in time. Whether it is through an in person sitting, or a photograph from a special occasion, I am creating an heirloom representation of a person that will last for generations.
When I’m not painting the human landscape, I’m working to reflect the beauty of nature through expressive and colorful brushstrokes of paint. I am drawn to the challenge of representing the harmonious range of light, shadow and hues that change moment by moment and day by day. I endeavor to help the viewer feel as though they are there and involved in the story and place of the painting.
My style is what I call “painterly realism”. I love to use expressive brushstrokes to represent the energy within a subject. I paint in-person and “plein air” whenever possible to immerse myself and get a strong feel for all the characteristics I’m trying to represent. I usually develop sketches and color studies in addition to taking a lot of photographs to help me retain certain details that might be lost otherwise.
My paintings hang in numerous private and academic collections in the Southeastern US. I am a member of the Portrait Society of America, Women Painters of the SouthEast, the Guild of Charlotte Artists, Southern Arts Society, and Charlotte Plein Air Painters. I regularly exhibit in juried and group art shows in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana.
