Drinking Water Advisory - LIFTED
Posted Date:

UPDATE - AUGUST 12, 2021 - 2:35PM

The three (3) additional water samples taken on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, have returned clean with no detection of e coli or total coliform or any other contaminant.  THE BOIL WATER ADVISORY HAS BEEN LIFTED.  There was no triggering event, such as a line break or new connection, that would have caused contaminants to be introduced into the water lines in the Irish Downs area.  Chlorine levels were well above the minimum requirements.  The positive test for these contaminants is suspected to be a false positive and may have been due to an error at the lab.

Citizens should keep in mind that samples take 24 hours to process once they get to the lab in Columbia, SC.  So when the routine sample was taken on Monday, August 9, it had to be delivered to the lab in Columbia and then tested for 24 hours.  We were not notified of the result until Wednesday morning. Please also note that this was a routine sample – one of four taken that day and the only sample that tested positive for contaminants.  There was no event that spurred the sampling and no expectation that there was contamination.  But because there was a positive sample, SCDHEC requires the Town to issue a boil water advisory out of an abundance of caution.

Three follow-up water samples were taken by Pace Analytical Services on Wednesday, August 11, immediately upon receiving notification of the bad sample.  One sample was taken up-stream, one down-stream and one at the same sample location.  These samples were transported to the lab and tested for 24 hours.  And, again, no contaminants were detected in any of the three samples.

Thanks to all of our customers for their patience in this matter.

Routine water samples taken by Pace Analytical Services LLC (Town contract lab) on Monday, August 9, 2021, in the Irish Downs area have tested positive for e coli and total coliform.  The chlorine levels were at acceptable levels and will continue to be monitored.  The water lines in that area have been flushed and there has been no loss of pressure.

Follow up samples will be taken today, Wednesday, August 11, 2021, with results expected by tomorrow, Thursday, August 12, 2021.  While the initial test results from Monday’s samples may be due to a lab error, the Town will continue investigating for a potential source of contamination.

Water customers are encouraged to BOIL WATER as a safety precaution.  Vigorously boil water for at least one (1) full minute prior to drinking or cooking.

Note that it takes at least 24 hours for results on samples.  The boil water advisory will be in effect until the results from samples have been returned and show to be absent of e coli and total coliform.
